Hi! I’m Bella.
As I’m sure you’ve figured out by now in your webpage journey, I am a Costume Designer and Theatre Artisan currently based in Iowa City, Iowa. Throughout my career, I’ve had the pleasure of wearing a variety of different hats.
Costume Designer. Distresser. Crafts Artisan. Scenic Artist. Scenic Designer. Media Artist. Props Artisan. Stage Manager.
All of these titles have in some way shaped who I have become as both a costume designer and theatre artist. I don’t think about costume design as just being clothes, but rather a story about who a character is and how they fit into the world we are creating onstage. I discover what this looks like visually by meticulously reading a play (of course) and approaching each design process differently based on how the characters I’m working with live and breathe on the page. For me, this means experimenting with different types of rendering styles and research methods to find the best means of communicating the visual world-building in my head to my directors and creative teams.
As a costume designer, I get to bring people and their stories to life in a way that is both personal and explorative. No design is ever truly finished, with each fitting and rehearsal hopefully bringing me one step closer to what lives in my imagination.
Thanks for visiting.
